Old Testament Overview Part 1

Here is the Old Testament Overview that we did during Work Week
Sections of the Bible: The bible's context can be categorized into four sections. When you read the bible you need to think of what they are saying in light of the section of history that we are in.
  • Kingdom Established: God created the world and man and establishes His Kingdom on Earth. (Genesis 1 and 2)
  • Kingdom Lost: Man sins and then God sets on His plan of redemption through Jesus Christ (Genesis Chapter 3-all the Old Testament)
  • Kingdom Regained: Jesus conquers death thru his death and ressurection on the cross. He regains His Kingdom from Satan but is yet to re-establish it as the world ruler. (New Testament)
  • Kingdom Re-Established: Jesus Christ returns for His own, makes judgement on Satan and the nations, gathers His own into His Kingdom, and rules it! (Revelation)
Here is another Way you Can Categorize the Bible. This organizes the plan of redemption in Christ throughout History.
  • Anticipation: All of the Old Testament focuses on the Anticipation of Jesus Christ.
  • Manisfestation: Jesus Christ, God incarnate, manifests Himself on earth (Gospels)
  • Proclamation: After Jesus ascends into Heaven and his disciples proclaim the gospel. (Acts)
  • Explanation: A few Disciples (mostly Paul, but also John...James and Peter...) write letters to people groups (mostly churches) that explain what it means to be a follower of Jesus in every way. (The Epistles...aka letters)
  • Culmination: Jesus fulfills all prophesy and the bible is wrapped up with His second coming, thousand year reign, and finally the new heaven and new earth.
Now, that is the bible in a "nutshell" but there is soooo much detail that you don't want to miss out on! The next part of the overview was the Eras of the Bible. I must give Max Anders credit. He is the author of 30 Days to Understanding the Bible. In my opinion, it is one of the best basic overviews of the entire bible. You should buy the book and go through it if you have not.
