Matthew 15:15-20 is a passage that I can relate to. I can relate to it because I am often like this with God. Jesus' own followers were confused. It makes sense that those who don't believe are confused but those who DO believe are confused. There are things that are pretty confusing in the bible, but there are also things that are pretty clear. What Jesus said in Matthew 15: 1-14 was pretty black and white. That is why Jesus questions them by asking "Are you still lacking in understanding also?"
Remember that the disciples were God fearing Jews. They had kept all the laws and this was a transition that they would struggle with. Jesus didn't care if they went about eating all the same things they have always eaten and avoided others...as long as they didn't hold everyone else to that standard. It doesn't matter what goes in your mouth (as far as food) it matters what comes out of your mouth....which stems from your heart.
What defiles a man" - evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, F351 thefts, false witness, slanders.
It was a simple lesson that Jesus followers were having a hard time with. Have you had a hard time with one of God's simple lessons? It seems so simple yet you wrestle with it the most? His disciples did the right thing by asking God Himself. When you are confused...ask Him. He will sort it out.
