The Bible - Its Subject and Purpose Part 2
We are going to do some major bible jumping today. As you go in and out of the Old and New Testament don't ignore how widespread this subject matter is. Also, some of these verses are deep in prophecy and harder subjects. Don't worry yourself about understanding that particular book of the bible. Just focus on things that you learn from that verse. Here is an example of what I mean using a silly, random, non-biblical sentence. Just pretend this sentence was taken out of a story/book.
"I got in my junky car and I went home to feed my dog and call my friend. I wanted to talk to her about how she had hurt me."
I don't need to worry about what happened or what the main character's friend did. I still can learn some things about the main character/ subject without needing to know context such as:
"I got in my junky car and I went home to feed my dog and call my friend. I wanted to talk to her about how she had hurt me."
I don't need to worry about what happened or what the main character's friend did. I still can learn some things about the main character/ subject without needing to know context such as:
- The main character has a car that's junky
- The main character has a car
- The main character has a dog
- The main character has a friend.
- The main character has a friend thats a girl.
- The main character gets his/her feelings hurt.
Do you see what I mean with the example above? When we study verses by themselves, without context, you should first pull out what you learn about the main subject matter. This is basic 7th grade English. (see, you are getting to use that knowledge !) Figure out who/what the subject is and write down what it tells you about them/it. That is all we are doing here. Don't over analyze it. Yes, analyzing how a verse fits in the context of this book is valuable to full understanding the meaning the truth the book is fully conveying, but...that is for another time and another study. If a verse and the context peeks your interest, make a note of it and after you are done with this you can go back and study that book. Here we are making belief statements based on what the bible claims in its words.
(p.s. another aspect of determining what you believe is my studying books as a whole. For example, I believe something about God based on reading the book of Esther. He tells me something about Himself, His purpose, and How he works. When you are done studying a book of the bible its good to make belief statements based on what He has shown you. )
Here are today's verses:
- Psalm 110:1
- Revelation 19:15-16
- Daniel 7:13-14
